Why does the Umbwe Route join another trail instead of continuing on its own to Uhuru Peak?
The Umbwe Route is a relatively direct approach to the mountain, so it connects with the Machame and Southern Circuit trail network near Barranco Camp. From there, climbers continue through established high-altitude camps towards Barafu Camp before making the summit attempt. This connection allows hikers approaching from different starting routes to share parts of the mountain's trail system. For your six-day climb, the early Umbwe section provides the distinctive steep ascent, while the later stages follow established routes towards the summit and back down the mountain.
