Why is the Marangu Route known as the “Coca-Cola Route”?

The Marangu Route is popularly known as the “Coca-Cola Route” because it is one of the oldest and most established routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It earned this nickname because it is considered a classic, straightforward option, and historically, huts along the route sold soft drinks and snacks, including Coca-Cola. The route also offers permanent hut accommodations, distinguishing it from routes that use camping. However, the nickname does not mean the climb is easy, as reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters remains a serious high-altitude challenge.
